The Law describes theft as the taking of personal property without permission or consent of the owner which should be enough bases for everybody to be more cautious in preventing identity theft. Yes, perhaps we should count ourselves quite lucky when the crime that will beset us is theft instead of robbery. After all, we will probably come out of it unharmed.

We probably will not even know that it happened to us until we just suddenly notice that something missing. But what if that something that we lose is one we treasure above all others? What if it is something that has always been natural to us, only for us to wake u one day and realize that it out of our control any longer? What if it is our identity that is stolen?

I have only recently acquainted myself with the crime of identity theft. It is a horrible crime, if I am asked. Yes, it may not involve physical harm; but it can damage the basic foundation that we have built our lives on: the identity that we live by.

We come out of it unharmed, yet the basis for the everyday processes and mechanisms that we go about it society is very sufficiently harmed. I, for one, cannot imagine how it must feel to suddenly, without any predictability, lose my identity to someone I most probably do not know. To realize that a stranger would probably have access to whatever he might deem necessary for his vested interests by using my identity is unthinkable.

It is a terribly distressing thought, then, to know that identity theft is now a crime that has continuously risen in proportions. Everyday, hundreds and even thousands become victim to the crime that takes away what is rightfully yours since birth. It is a vast understatement to say that this crime results to a major inconvenience. In all actuality, it is a great burden. Because of the implications and the growing proportions that this crime has taken, it is crucial to take action, to take immediate steps that will prevent you from being a victim of identity theft.

The steps towards the prevention of id theft are not always easy. It is easily doable, yes, but it is not so easily maintained. This is because you need to be well disciplined in the manner you carry out these steps. One oversight might be enough to endanger the sanctity of your identity.

Delete.
Whenever you throw any device that is capable of retaining memory in such order like files and folders like the computer, make sure that you delete all the files in your hard disk that may contain any personal information you might have.

Cover.
During public transactions like teller machine withdrawals, always cover the number keys with your hand when you punch in your pin code. This is to prevent the id thief from knowing or even getting a hint of what your password is.

Inquire.
When you decide to answer ads regarding jobs or any such advertisement that might require any personal information, you initially have to make sure that the agency handing it out is legitimate. Otherwise, it just might be a way for id thieves to fish for your information.

Prevention is better than cure. It is what they always say about sickness, but it sure is true with preventing identity theft.
