Almost 80% of the people, who access the Internet, use a search engine to find what they are looking for. So it becomes doubly important to get a high search engine ranking position for your website if you want a good flow of traffic. A search engine ranking means where your website will be listed in the list of search results of that particular engine, for particular keywords which the person has put in the search box. Google of course is the most used search engine and the others also follow almost the same procedure for ranking a website.

One of the considerations a search engine gives while giving a rank is the number of back-links that a website has. Back-links are the links on other websites through which people come visiting your website. There are many ways to build these back-links and we are going to see the ones where you do not have to spend anything to establish these links. These links have a two-fold advantage, one is you immediately get targeted traffic when someone clicks on these links and secondly the more such links get clicked, your ranking position in the search engine goes up, and you will get even more traffic.

Increasing your website search engine ranking position by free link building can be done in many ways. One of the most commonly used tactics, is making interesting comments in DoFollow blogs. These are blogs which allow you to post a link in your comment and the search engine will take it to be a back link. You will have to be careful what you comment and it must be contextual to the topic being discussed. If you make nonsensical statements just with the aim of posting your link, your post will be deleted by anti-spam filters and any other moderating method that the blog uses.

Another popular method used for building free links is social bookmarking. There are number of social bookmarking sites and as the name suggests they let you post a bookmark of the website you like with a brief description about it. You can bookmark your website with an interesting summary on these sites and this will create the required back links when people start to click on your entry.

Submitting articles to article directories is perhaps the best way of promoting back links. Write an interesting article about a topic that is connected with the theme of your website and in the resource box put the link to your website. After reading your article the reader should be interested enough to click on the link given, to get further information.

Posting on forums is also a great way of building back links. Here too, your postings should be in context with the discussion and if you are starting a new thread make sure to make it interesting. Your digital signature will usually have the link to your website; or if it is a DoFollow forum you can put your link in the post itself.
