Drive alert, arrive alive; that is a new slogan being touted here in our area. Statistics are showing that it is as dangerous to drive sleepy as it is to drive drunk. Reflexes are slowed, mental awareness diminished and concentration impaired. I personal don't know of anyone who has been in a drunk driving accident but I know of several who have fallen asleep at the wheel and gone into a ditch or worse.

I fell asleep at the wheel once, crossing two lanes of traffic and hitting the center divider. Thankfully other than a few bruises and bumps no one was injured, it could have been much worse. We had been driving all night and when morning came with no sleep, I just couldn't keep myself away any longer. .

Every time in the last year or two that I have had a near miss on the road it has been with a texting driver. Reading a message instead of watching to road has serious ramifications. So much so, that the insurance agency that I work for will no longer cover an accident if the one who caused it was texting. Drinking and driving don't mix, texting and driving really don't mix either.

Second only to texting is those who are heavily engaged in a phone conversation, ignoring the people they have cut off, tail gated or otherwise endangered. It is almost impossible to talk on the phone and be a good, courteous driver.

We all understand the serious problems with drunk drivers. Hazardous waste transportation has to be done carefully, under the right driving conditions, and packaged so as to withstand accidents and weather and other unforseen conditions. There are companies whose sole purpose it is to make sure that when hazardous waste is transported it is packaged properly and safely.

This safety test including medical packaging, blood samples, bio-waste, nuclear waste and any other hazard to the public. The testing is done through shaking, dropping, impact and vibration to insure the hazardous materials arrive at their destiny safely.

It's a jungle out there, drive safely, alert, sober, hands free and avoid hazardous transporters to ensure a safe and pleasant commute.
