What is primer after all?

It’s a kind of paint that’s chemically mixed so as to bind it to the subject material. It’s basically an undercoat, and is designed not to offer durability or shine but to act a "beachhead" on the exterior of the object to be painted.

Primers are sold in both liquid and spray-can forms. In cases when different kinds of plastics are being used primer helps slow the growth of fungi as years pass by. Priming also aids in preventing damage and fungi on wood, gypsum board and other porous surfaces.

Wood Priming

Wood has to be primed compulsorily, given that bare wood will simply soak up the paint applied directly to it, cutting down the life-expectancy of the paint. Painting on bare wood surfaces will also cause alteration in coloring. However, priming helps remove dry rot and wrapping of the wood itself.

Metal Priming

Aluminum metal needs priming given that it prevents rust. It also prevents flaking of the paint from the metal. Even aircraft parts need to be primed to save it from atmospheric conditions.

Plastic Priming

Plastics are also primed in order to obscure the original color of the plastics. Akin to wood, the primer disallows the color of the object to seep through or alter the paint applied atop it. Also, it brings down the number of coats.

Primer colors

Spray primer are mostly sold in white and gray colorings. Gray primer will make the colors applied atop a wee bit darker hue than white primer.

Application of Primer

Primer, both liquid and spray can be applied like a regular paint. More than one coat may be required, applying consistently until the surface appears even.
