For some climates, this is a non-issue. However, if one operates in a place wherein this is an issue, a portable air conditioner may be the best available solution.

Consider that 21st Century computational devices require certain temperature ranges to operate at maximum capability. If one's server or mainframe is placed in a building lacking sufficient air conditioning, then overheating and costly repairs are likely to result. One might argue that installing a wall unit will solve this problem and, in certain cases, would be correct. Not every room used to house a server or mainframe possesses access to the building's exterior. In this instance, a portable unit is the best solution. Such units are mobile and can be moved from one room to another should the need arise, eliminating the cost of installing wall units.

What of buildings which do possess central air conditioning? Portable units may be a benefit even under these circumstances. If one does not wish to install a separate thermostat for a server room, a portable unit may eliminate this need, as certain models possess internal thermostats which enable them to keep their environment at a constant temperature. This presents a savings not only in the short term - multiple thermostats can be quite costly - but in the long term should one's business need to move to larger quarters, this eliminates the need of future installations.

One must wonder why anyone would do otherwise than to purchase a portable air conditioning unit if the benefits are so manifold. Nothing is as completely convenient as one wishes. Portable units often have catches for condensed moisture which must be emptied periodically. This time frame varies, but is generally five hours or more. Some units also need a place to vent heated air, such as a window or door. This means that the area outside the location of the unit will become heated even as the unit's immediate vicinity is cooled. These conditions detract from the desirability of portable air conditioning units. However, despite the issues, these units present an attractive alternative for one seeking the particular conditioning of a specific locale within a building and those wishing to avoid the cost of installing new units at every move.
