The theme or subject of an essay is an important part or aspect to keep in mind when writing content, then forms after as you continue writing. The theme can be anything from a single word e.g. "Love", a sentence e.g. "Smoking is injurious to health", a quotation "I have a dream" etc. A number of times the topics can be chosen from a list of topics given to you as an assignment or in an examination.
If this is not the case, the plethora of subjects to write on is huge. You can write an essay on virtually anything and everything in the world. Once you decide on a suitable topic to write on, it is advisable to go about it carefully so as not to stray away from the main theme. You should gather the required information on your chosen topic and think over how and what idea you will be putting forward. Research is always a good idea and can be immensely helpful.
If the topic is assigned to you then it's easier to start writing, but even then there are quite a few things to consider. The specifics of what you are being asked to write about are also significant factors in terms of the content of your essay. After thorough understanding of the topic at hand, divert your attention to the content of your essay and avoid adding unnecessary information as well as needless words in the course of your work in order to achieve a better grade.
A good idea would be to incorporate a thesis statement in your work which will give a gist of or summarize your thoughts and suggestions that you intend to present and argue upon in your essay. These should be given out in a minimum number of words, say hardly 30 or less in order to not only give the reader an idea of what they are about to read but also a brief introduction without boring the person with minute details. This also presents a picture of confidence and the ability to understand your writing which will surely impress the reader.
When it comes to an essay, the important thing to remember is the introduction and the conclusion. These should be quite powerful in nature since these are the two parts of your essay that have the most impact. However, that does not mean that you should completely lose your focus when it comes to the content. It is important to get the reader hooked in order to make them curious about what they are about to read. Grasping the reader's attention has always been a sure shot way of making them enjoy your work.
Another thing to remember is to divide your work into paragraphs in order to make it neat as well as presentable and yet easy to read. This always gives out a good impression and will make the reader want to read your essay. Discuss each idea in a separate paragraph and then give a connecting statement for each one to link those ideas together.
